Get to Know

Hi! My name is Roger, I cut rocks and I'm so torn between my right brain and my left brain that I'm ambedextrous. As a child growing up in Ohio, I enjoyed a lot of diverse hobbies; I drew, experimented with electronis and collected insects and fossils. My interest in science was so strong that it motivated me to earn a Ph. D in physical chemistry. After after receiving my degree I moved to Mobile, Al to take a job with International Paper in their research department. I fell in love with this beautiful old city by the bay.

I moved back to Ohio for 5 years. All the time I was going to school and working in the paper industry I was developing an interest in playing guitar and growing tropical plants. When the research department began phasing out I took a chance and moved back to Mobile to open a nightclub, called Culture Shock, in order to pursue my growing infatuation with playing music, with a special interest in bass guitar.

In the three years I had the club open we featured live original bands from the local area as well as regionally and nationally known bands. We featured more bands in a week than any other club in our area.

Since the club days I have become very good at repairing and restoring cars and that's always fun. Well, not always but I always win in the end.

My wife has been making jewelry for several years and her work is quite interesting. I told her that I liked what she did and that if I could figure out how to do it with power tools I would. When I was exposed to the world of lapidary arts it was a great day for me. Inspired by the beautiful stones I saw a friend of a friend cutting, I built my own saws and grinders and polishers. It's been interesting and sometimes frustrating but I am very happy that I started doing it because it's an excellent way to use both sides of my brain at the same time.
