Get to Know
I began making pottery about three years ago as an antidote to writing.
My longtime career as a writer requires sitting quietly and thinking linearly, which results - usually -- in a comprehensible story.
Working with clay is dynamic. It can be accompanied by music or conversation. It's far from sedentary; often I'm standing or pacing, lifting or crouching, or running up and down the stairs.
Pots are crafted in three dimensions, great exercise for both sides of the brain. There is linearity to working in clay -- kneading, shaping, carving, painting, firing - but the story the clay tells can be unpredictable, and may turn out incomprehensible.
