Get to Know

A lifelong artist, I drew, colored, painted, and made books as a child. As a teen, I took every art class offered by my high school, as well as metal shop and wood shop (I wasn't too keen on home ec, though). I've continued my learning adventure by taking many classes including photography, chain maille, precious metal clay (PMC), metal-smithing for jewelers, beaded embroidery, and lampwork bead-making. I've also taken advantage of the many wonderful books and videos available to further my education.

My current focus is on making lampwork glass beads and mixed media art charms to use in my jewelry designs.

To me, glass is the perfect artistic medium: easy to shape when it's hot, glass plays with light and color beautifully, and barring accidents, glass art endures long after the artist. As a student, I am intensely in love with the subject âEUR\" there is no way to know everything there is about glass, so I can study for the rest of my life and always learn something new.

Art charms are truly a delight âEUR\" I thoroughly enjoy creating, swapping, collecting, and designing with these limited edition mixed media pieces of art.

An art charm is a tiny work of art with a jump ring on it for attaching to something - it might be attached to a bracelet, or used as a pendant, or incorporated into home decor. Art charms may be made of almost any kind of material, using almost any kind of artistic technique. An art charm is the product of an individual artist or collaborative group, but is not something that has been cranked out in a factory. I'm thrilled to be one of the many contemporary artists making and swapping art charms.

Curious to learn more about art charms? Check out Making Mixed Media Art Charms & Jewelry, the best-selling book I wrote with my dear friend, Peg Krzyzewski.

Peg and I also started the Art Charms Yahoo group for people who love mixed media art charms like we do - artists and collectors alike. We have ongoing swaps, contests, and a virtual "chat" every Thursday night. (link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ArtCharms/)
