About my shop: Stay tuned, I'm shiny and new! About me: I am a life-long crafter with a background in theatre and burlesque. Randomness inspires me and makes me laugh. I grew up crafting with my grandmother, making everything from simple Christmas ornaments from pine cones and popsicle sticks to elaborate bouquets of flowers made from seeds. From a very young age I learned the fundamentals of crafting: imagination and a glue gun. From childhood and into adolescence, it was costumes, accessories, trimmings and sequins. Lots and lots of sequins. (I was a figure skater. In the 80s. Did I mention sequins?) My mother was primarily a woodworker, which explains my tomboyish love affair with my husband's cordless drill. Unfortunately, for the moment I lack the space and tools for large-scale woodworking, but one day... I have been working with the same burlesque troupe for almost 10 years. Since the early days I have been inspired by their requests for odd props, costumes and pasties (all on a shoe-string budget, of course. Starving artists and all that). There's a good reason they call me the "Dollar Store Diva". I can go in with a vague idea and come out with a fully formulated plan and the things to make it with. There is nothing more satisfying for me than to be able to bring a vision (my own, or yours!) to vibrant, detailed life.
I created this bag after my husband introduced me to the new series of Doctor Who. It can be worn over the shoulder or as a backpack. It may not be bigger on the inside, but it does have a silver lining! It gets a lot of attention at conventions, especially with the little flashing light at the top!
A commission for a gentleman who teaches under-privileged kids. He told the story of Mouskie, who lives in a kleenex box. The original Mouskie was a cardboard cut-out. The slightly ragged and used look is intentional.
Witchie was my second attempt at a plush doll. I made the body to practice and to try out a new pattern. I hadn't any kind of concept in mind at the time. I had a big red bow from a Christmas gift that I thought would be cute on a hat or something. Since it's always Halloween at our house, a witch hat was the obvious choice. The hat was made first and the rest kind of followed.
The man who started it all... A few years ago, as a challenge, I was asked if I could create an old man to sit on a bench in an acquaintance's hallway. I wasn't happy with my original concept and couldn't make him look the way I wanted. After a year of creative blockage (during which time, said acquaintance's wife bought another doll) I finally came up with Fritz. It was the process of making this doll that really made me realize how much I love creating things. Fritz is entirely sewn by hand. The pattern is mine with the exception of the head, which was adapted and enlarged from one found online (no name to credit, sorry!). He now has pride of place on our own bookshelf.
