Skills and Techniques
We do a variety of techniques in the arena of kilnforming glass. We utilize basic layering, edge work, pattern bars, pot melts, inclusions, kiln carving, and liquid glass and enamels in the forms of GlassLine, Liquid Stringer Medium, and others. Our firings range from slumping through casting temperatures. We make some of our own molds. We also utilize various cold working processes and do some lamp work.

Get to Know
Grynn Glass is a collaborative effort of Greg Frye and Lynn Silbernagel. We are friends, life partners, business partners, and art partners. Like our life in general, all of our work is collaborative. For some items this may only mean asking for or offering opinions about color combinations; for other pieces we work through design ideas, the assembly and firing processes, as well as finishing through coldworking and packaging. Greg's tendency is to work on larger pieces, while Lynn loves utilizing scrap and creating smaller works. We believe that art can also be functional and pride ourselves on producing mainly functional items.
We have both been working in kilnformed glass for a number of years, and have taken classes at the Bullseye Resource Center in Portland, Oregon as well as overseas. Greg has also done courses with Gil Reynolds, Steve Klein, and Marc Petrovic. Among the topics we have studied are general kilnforming, bead making and other torchworking, coldworking, edge firing, slumping, kilncarving, casting, and roll-ups. We also teach kilnforming to students from 4th to 12th grades and offer one-on-one workshops for adults.
Greg is particularly fascinated with the duality and plurality of things in the world. Glass is a marvelous medium with which to explore these phenomena as it also has dual and seemingly opposite characteristics -- it is solid and liquid, transparent and opaque, linear and fluid, flat and shaped, colored and colorless. Many of his pieces incorporate a variety of these qualities. He prefers to leave interpretation of his work to the viewer rather than stating a specific intention for each. This allows for different perspectives thus enhancing the plurality.
We hope you find things that catch your eye, that strike a chord within you, and that are unique. We love doing custom work, so please let us know if you would like to work together to create something based on what you see here or something completely original.

Custom wall piece for dental reception area. Design by Michael Hancock at gofishcreative.com, glass work by Greg Frye, Grynn Glass, LLC. This piece measures about 40" x 24". It was made using glass and enamels and is an example of the "kilncarving" technique. Belmont Family Dentistry, Portland, Oregon.
One of the first "Chaos or Control" pieces Greg made. This photo shows the huge variation between the front and back of the piece. Both patterns are created in one firing of the kiln. Private collection, Israel.
One of Greg's "Chaos or Control" pieces in the kiln, starting to move. These pieces require at least two different firing processes, often more depending upon their complexity. They also require coldworking to complete. This picture was taken during the second firing process.
A selection of necklaces made through a variety of processes. Some of these necklaces, or similar ones, are available on this site.
