The winding road to the art world‚EUR¶
As the son of an electrical engineer/computer scientist and an avid computer dork myself my path seemed clear. I entered the University of Colorado Engineering School to follow in my fathers foot steps. Little did I know, destiny had other plans for me! Starting at a very young age I‚EUR(TM)ve always loved to create; designing games for my friend and I to play. Much to the dismay of my parents, my other passion was to tinker with anything mechanical. It didn‚EUR(TM)t matter whether or not something was broken‚EUR¶I‚EUR(TM)d take it apart and sometime I‚EUR(TM)d even get back together again. There was usually the spare part or two but hey it still worked. Shortly after entering the university I purchased a 1967 Mustang convertible to restore and impress the young women. Requiring a welder to make some repairs, I purchased one at a local garage sale and that‚EUR(TM)s where it all started. Having just met a beautiful young women (not through the Mustang, it was still in pieces) I needed a Christmas gift. I was very much in love with her but it seemed too early to buy an expensive gift. Love comes quickly at 22! I decided being avid wine lovers I would weld her a wine rack from some metal I had laying around. Our ‚EURoelove‚EURĚ didn‚EUR(TM)t make it till Christmas so I was left with the rack. At the request of friends I made several more and started doing art shows with what I started calling functional art. At the request of one store owner, who loved my work but not the price points, I created some smaller ‚EURoegift‚EURĚ items and my business was started. To the shock of my parents I dropped out of engineering school and used the money to start my business. In time, an entire line of decorative and functional home accents was developed and in 1997, Quarry Collection was born. Ten Years later I launched stonegifts.com to bring my art gifts and home decor to every corner of the earth. Though having moved mostly to stone, I still find my inspiration for all my products in the rugged and beautiful landscape of Colorado. I don‚EUR(TM)t care for faux finishes, plastic or bling. Everything I make is from real stone and natural patina metal. I‚EUR(TM)ve developed my own tools and techniques to enhance the beauty of these natural materials. Over the years, new products and new production methods have helped me expand the Quarry Collection line but I remain committed to using only natural materials. ‚EUR"Charles Mason
