Get to Know
Creating isn't a choice for me, it's an integral part of who I am.
It may be cliche, but I've been involved in the arts since I could hold a crayon in my hands. I was the kid that walked around school with a sketchbook and enjoyed art class by far the best.
I was lucky enough to have an incredible high school art teacher that took joy in introducing new methods, materials and getting students involved. (Thank you Lois!) This class was instrumental in helping me to look beyond just drawing and painting and to get creative with the materials around me.
In 2001, I completed my BFA degree and began working as a graphic designer as well as freelancing on a variety of projects.
Then in 2007, I stumbled across a new outlet: Mask Making. Now I had made a few masks in classes throughout the years, but this time the light bulb switched on. This time I made a movie replica mask for a friend and loved the finished product so much that I began thinking about what I could make for myself.
It seemed to coincide perfectly with my love of all things Renaissance Festival. My new project was to make myself a mask to wear with all the costume pieces I had purchased.
Since then I've found that making masks encompasses a wide variety of outlets I enjoy. Each mask is hand formed with paper mache (sculpting) and decorated (painting, reusing materials) with a variety of materials. Because each and every mask is hand formed, there is a lot of time involved in each one. The end result though is that no two pieces are exactly a like!
Each mask is a unique work of art that can be worn or displayed as you prefer.
As much as I love the masks, on occasion other projects spark my interest as well. Visit the shop often to make sure you don't miss other unique items as well as to make use of my graphic design services if you have the need.
