Get to Know
After many years of working in black and white as a freelance editor/writer, my life exploded in color several years ago when I discovered bead crochet. Since then, I have never tired of thinking up and trying new color combinations. One thing lead to another, and now I have a flameworking torch set up in my garage to make my own glass beads.
Each bracelet I make is a delight. I sit at the bead table in my office and study the tubes of Japanese seed beads. I group them and regroup them and consider the order in which I will string them. I think about the finish of each bead and which ones will stand out, which ones will blend in. I love when I can weave together 4 or 6 different beads and make them look like one new, unique color or pattern, like a piece of fabric.
I have enjoyed thinking of new ways to use my crocheted ropes: necklaces, napkin rings, and key chains.
I like to use the lampwork glass beads in ways that let the beads be a true focal point. I prefer not to have lots of metallic or crystal beads competing in my designs. I strive for a bold, simple, and colorful look.
I also regularly donate my glass beads to Beads of Courage, an arts-in-medicine program that supports children with serious illness.
