I live to dye, and have been for almost forty years. When I am eighty-five, there will still be dye under my fingernails.

fabric, dye, natural forms, nature, negative space, color contrasts and juxtaposition

Skills and Techniques

I have been asked many times how I get the particular effects in each piece. Some have even intimated that I use photoshop or some digital means, but that could not be further from the truth.

Get to Know

I have been a fabric artist most of my adult life; my original designs have been available exclusively online since 2006. I work on my designs full time in my Richmond, VA, studio.
~The fine "hand" of the silk is unaffected by wax or resists because I apply dye directly to the scarves, diluted or thickened with seaweed thickener. Fiber-reactive dyes bond chemically with the fibers and are completely permanent. Each scarf and necktie is treated as a unique painting.
~In my last life, I taught high school. Loved it, retired, don't miss it at all.

I'd rather be dyeing, about 1969. All I could afford was cotton and Cushing's rug dyes-- which have to be heated. I learned a lot about dyeing and clamping, though.
