Skills and Techniques
My painting style is similar to watercolor with soft and transluscent colors. My painting is a fusion style of East and West technique and aesthetics. First, the porcelain is hand-made and dried. I work only with greenware and all paintings are initially once fired. Cobalt blue has a long history from Persia and China to Europe, it is my primary color and has a beautiful aesthetic when applied to porcelain.

Artist Philip Read; ceramic painter and designer.
Fusion Painting describes my technique and art philosophy. Inspired by both Eastern and Western artists I combine the elements of cross cultural styles. My ceramic paintings are visual narratives. They are journeys and stories of my observations of Nature and culture.
The paintings reflect narratives in visual images and some paintings contain text to further engage the viewer with the work. The landscapes represent actual places I have seen and visited. I work from my journal of drawings and text that I collect from my travels. My painting technique is a fusion of Eastern and Western aesthetics to represent my personal visual experience.
I paint each as a personal journey, a narrative. They are living memories of my observations and I create each as a journey inviting the viewer to experience our shared observations. The paintings represent the smallest movements of Nature's beauty and the inspiring grandeur of the landscape. I initially sketch these observations in order to capture the essence of the location. I complete the paintings in my studio.
