Get to Know

A geologist, I teach earth science at the University of Dayton. I enjoy working with and am an avid collector of earth materials: rocks, stones, sand, even dirt in my garden! Whenever I am on a walk, I am on the lookout for something interesting to pick up!

In my sand paintings, I use natural, undyed sand collected from all around the world. My family and friends collect sand for me whenever they travel.

Here's a link to my website where you can see more of my sand paintings!

I also have a blog about sand art

In my jewelry, I use undyed stones. The simple, natural beauty of the stones is the focus of my creations.

I welcome commissions! Just ask!

The process of sand painting First you collect the sand. This is a picture of a young friend collecting sand at Lake Tahoe, CA.

Then you wash the sand, dry, and sieve it. In the summer, I dry the sand outdoors (watch out for cats!) and in the winter, I dry it in my at-college son's bedroom.

Once the sand is prepared, then I am able to begin sand painting. First I draw a picture on some type of board, then the sand painting begins! This is my new work area. I carved it out of our living room and now I can look out into my beautiful garden as I sand paint.

Sand painting is completed in multiple steps. After each layer or color is applied, you need to let the sand completely dry before going on to the next sand. In this picture you can see the first layer of my pandas in the snow sand painting.
