Skills and Techniques

Traditional Chinese brush painting is a single-stroke painting technique that uses hand-ground inks on rice paper or painting silk. Its complex system of strokes and techniques have been cultivated for thousands of years and are certain to be around for a thousand more.

You can only lay down a stroke ONCE. You cannot go back and forth over the same spot to correct a mistake, so Chinese brush painting lives in the here and now. It's all about the immediacy of time and life.

The intent with Chinese brush painting is so capture the "Qi" or "spirit" of a subject. Hyper-realism is NOT the goal. A more loose, figurative approach is thought to snag that bit of personality that shines through in every person, rock, cat, tree, or fish.

I also do various forms of printmaking (hand-pulled, one of a kind fine art prints, including woodblock prints, linoleum blocks, foam relief prints, and monotypes).

My shop also offers reproduction prints, which are photographic reprints of other paintings, NOT to be confused with my "block prints" which are one of a kind, hand-printed originals.

I also do a lot of work in charcoal, graphite (my first loves), ink, acrylics, oil paint, oil pastel, Western watercolors, and beeswax collage.

Get to Know

I do traditional Chinese brush painting, printmaking (block prints, collagraph, woodblock, linocut, monotypes), reproduction prints, oil pastel paintings, mixed media, charcoal, oils, watercolors, acrylics, sculpture, and more.

I have over 20 years of cultivated experience in sketching, inkwork, and painting.

My Chinese brush paintings are part of my daily meditation and each piece is done carefully, calmly, and spiritually.

I also do illustration and portraiture and work in a variety of subject matters. My ArtFire store houses related-themed items, but I do other work as well.

Artist Statement::
Much of my work is inspired by the Chinese masters, Taoism, philosophy, and the wonderful things in ordinary life. Whether it's the slant of light as August folds into September, the brilliant orange of a Cheeto, or the playful humor of a kitten, I find the movement of art present in all things.

Chinese brush painting is part of my daily meditation. I take each stroke, each layer, and each subject seriously. Yet, in all that heaviness, there's something wonderfully humorous. The lighthearted balances the grave. Such is the harmony of life.
