Get to Know

I grew up in Delaware, but at age 19, moved to Pennsylvania where I lived for the next 22 years. That\'s where I fell in love with the art of piecing and quilting, though in those early days, I wasn\'t very good at it. Somewhere between my first and second child I decided to abandon all sewing projects, and gave (or attempted to give) my fabric away. So much for that! My best friend and quilting mentor decided quitting wasn\'t appropriate, and undertook the task of getting me hooked again. I will be forever grateful to her for her patience and persistence! Quilts for my children soon led to quilts for charity raffles, and somewhere along in there I stumbled upon the internet world of quilters. It was those gals who hung the moniker \"Squirrel\" on me ... it later became \"Desert Squirrel\" when I moved to Arizona.

Participation in a year long project with one of the Quilt in a Day instructors (Loretta Smith) left me hungry for more \"blocks of the month\" ... and after some pouting from fellow swappers at the end of that project, I accepted the challenge of hosting a block of the month swap to keep us all together. Over the years we\'ve evolved from photocopied patterns mailed each month to swappers, and utter chaos, to the more streamlined Block of the Month group we now have on Yahoo. My co-host Margo took a class in web design, which now has our blocks of the month. Check out our archived patterns, and current projects here . This year marks the 17th anniversary of having a web page! Every time I\'ve been ready to throw in the towel and quit, a quilter (newbie as well as experienced) will tell me \"I tried something I\'ve never done before, thank you\", and I forget all about the frustration of orchestrating year long swaps ... and away we go again! I live in Michigan now and hang out at the Sunshine Quilt Shop! Margo and I can\'t meet at McDonald\'s to open \"squishies\" together, but thanks to the internet, we still can stay connected.

I come from a long line of needlewomen, spinners, weavers, tatters, and more. But through this wonderful craft called quilting, rich in history and legend, I\'ve met some incredible people, and have had some unbelievable experiences. My life has truly been enriched.

And of course, Squirrels have enriched it even more!! I had the wonderful experience of raising an orphaned squirrel when I lived in Florida. My quilting buddies nicknamed me \"Squirrely Mom\", and the \"Squirrel\" part stuck. From Florida to AZ, I became the \"Desert Squirrel\", and when I moved to MI, the \"Quilted Squirrel\". My squirrel was later released at the Sanford Park Zoo in Florida. Our Michigan squirrels are well fed and spoiled rotten here in our yard!

This is a more "personal" bio, from a different forum:
Married to Dennis Turbin. Used to raise Scottish Fold cats in AZ ... I have one SF now, Misty Whispurrs, and Sebastian O'Malley, my red boy rescue. Misty is 5, Sebastian 2.

I live in Michigan . Au Sable is next door to Oscoda (share the same Chamber of Commerce) ... on the sunrise side of the state. Lake Huron is across the street. Literally. On a windy day I can listen to it, and see the whitecaps through the trees of my neighbor's yard. I have just about an acre ... most of which is wooded. I feed the local fur and feather contingent that shows up every night. Here are photos of some of my liddle buddies if you're interested ... http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2066467&id=1489099967&l=151ac512b9

Have been an industrial weaver, auto damage appraiser, office manager for a construction company, managed two apartment complexes, WWII historian for a museum/restoration facility for vintage war birds, Editor of a quarterly newsletter for a retired WWII group of Dad's until his death this February. I am not "over" that yet; ran a photo-mat, and on my last 'gig" was dubbed "Radar O'Reilly" for 6 directors of nursing in a 300+ bed facility in AZ. I worked for the hospital in Mesa for 12 years. I have to say I DO miss that. My favorite boss still whines about when I will return to AZ. Told her not to hold her breath!

Born and raised in Delaware, though my heart is left in Bucks County PA. Lived in FL for awhile, then AZ, now MI. Goal is to return to PA one of these years, nearer to my daughters and grand kids.

I turned 61 this year (2010), but still pass for mid thirties, which is a royal pain in the rear most of the time. Though I am disabled (nasty ole fibromyalgia, for which I have neither the time, nor patience), use a lovely cane named Oliver (when I remember it. Not pretty when I forget). Why? it has a hawk's head ... and a personality! I have a wedding ministry (www.honorandcherish.net). (That's a long story). Many of my quilting customers are kitties from Catster, who order them for their sweetheart kidden or whatever.

I do my best to create the daily blog for Misty and one for Me. um, I am behind!! (The links are in my siggy at the bottom ...)

I'm an internet junkie, and gadget junkie, and a book worm. I can't manage hard bound books though, only paperback.

I have three grown children, Heather (36) Laura (27) and Bill (24). The girls are married. Heather has given me two grand-dogs and a grand kidden (even a SF at that!), Laura has given me two grand kiddens and two grandsons, one 2, one 5 months old as of September 2010); Bill isn't married yet (!), but has given me a grand-kidden, a red boy named Clyde! Hubby has three kids also, 37, 28, and 22. We did the math, I could have had them all, but most likely wouldn't be speaking to him any more. Some are just 10 or 11 months apart. His oldest is married, and we have 2 grand dogs, 2 grand cats; #2 is studying in Portland OR to be an RN, one grand dog. We have NO CLUE what #3's plans are.

I collect teapots ... but not big ones! I like to fix a cup of tea for myself in the evening, and insist on a pot, properly steeped, and a little tray, and a tea cup! Most of my tea 'things' are odds and ends, things I find at flea markets or antique stores.

I am madly in love with squirrels. In fact, my quilting moniker is the Quilted Squirrel. ANYthing squirrel.

I love TV shows such as Bones, Law and Order SVU, Covert Affairs, Royal Pains, HawthoRNe, NCIS, stuff like that...

Ethnicity? Human for the most part, possibly a bit of cat in there somewhere ... Political stance? the same God who made you, made me. Sexual orientation? my husband cooks, and he does dishes. I think I'll keep him. Personal ad? Wanted: an honest friend, preferably alive! rewards are endless.

I loved this quilt, and was sorry it sold! The photo doesn't do it justice, in the the background was "natural" not yellow.

This was a fun quilt to do. Working on point has its advantages and disadvantages, but I was especially pleased with this one.

I will have this available in pattern form one of these days.

this was my "mixed metaphor" quilt. Hand and machine pieced, hand and machine quilted! Worked on it while waiting in airports.
