Every Christmas, at least at my house, is a handmade holiday in some way. I'm always trying a new cookie recipe or making a new wreath for the front door or, my favorite, crafting up some gifts for my loved ones. I get a great deal of personal satisfaction out of creating and crafting a beautiful home for the holidays.
This year is our second holday season in our little house. Last year I made a lot of ornaments and decorations on a less than shoestring budget. This year, I've gotten a bit craftier and tried out some new ideas and added some twists to some not so new ideas.I went a little crazy, I admit. There are now enough ribbon ... » Read More
In the wintertime, I frequently find myself away from home more than usual. My day job takes me away to the city during the week and with the difficult weather this time of year can bring, I often spend more time on my own in the city. Being away from my home and family and the day-to-day responsibilities that entails gives me an opportunity to focus more on creating and less on what I need to do next. Although I miss them terribly, it is a welcome break from the routine of my life.
Traveling with crafts isn't difficult--or at least it doesn't have to be. I spent a little time this last weekend setting up a small tote with a few things ... » Read More
Last year at this time, we were all anticipating a birth. My friend was anxiously awaiting the birth of her first child The doctors told her it was a boy (which turned out to be just so) so I leaned heavily towards the blue and green end of the baby color spectrum. I made a ripple afghan and a little blue cap and two pairs of coordinating booties for the new little fellow.
I got a little overwhelmed with all the blue baby stuff so I went and dug through my stash and found a bit of of some very nice white, sort of sparkly yarn and got to work on a new pair of booties. And because I'm a little tired of looking at blue, I used bright pi... » Read More
Making do is something I heard my Grandparents say all the time. They all lived through the Depression and I always figured they had the market cornered on knowing about 'making do' because of it. I also figured they were just talking to hear themselves speak sometimes in an attempt to make me see how cushy my life is.
That was when I was a kid. My parents did well. We never really wanted for anything we really needed. A lot of the time, we had the things we wanted as well. My upbringing wasn't harsh or poor. We were lower middle class with a new house every so often and a catalog shopping spree for school clothes every fall. Bo... » Read More
When I was young and starting my own family, I enthusiastically spent most of my pregnancy crocheting things for my newborn. Back in that particular day, the colors were limited to a pale palette of pastels in 'baby colors' in one weight of 'baby yarn.' It was the traditional thing to do so of course I did it in blue, green, yellow and white for my little boy. Had I been expecting a girl, I would have used pink, lavender, yellow and white. It was, and is, tradition.
Things are much different today. The young, expectant mother of this century has other ideas on what she wants for her newborn. Sure, there are lots of women who lik... » Read More
