My first try at soldering a bezel - Finished!


Today I put 2 jump rings on pendant and I was going to solder them, but it didn't work. I am not sure what the problem was. My first try at soldering a bezel - 3rd try is a charm


I finally did it!! I had a hard time getting my solder to flow, everything turned black and my flux turned a greenish blue.1st try - I tried doing this on a charcoal block and nothing happened, just turned black.2nd try - I tried it on a tripod and nothing happened, my flux was greenish blue and copper black.3rd try - I scruffed up the back plate with some 320 grit paper and pickled it to clean it. I put my copper back plate and bezel in my 3rd hand and heated it underneath. My solder started jumping around so I had to get everything in place. I received a pretty Turquoise stone from my mom who hand cut and polished it. I managed to get a silver bezel cut to the shape of my stone. I cut is so there was a small gap between the ends and when the two ends were put together, I had a perfect join.I took my piece to my soldering table and attempted to solder the join. My first try was unsuccessful because the ball of solder moved as it started to melt resulting in the solder to melt in a big glob along side of the join as you can see in the photo.I pickled it and tried again, making sure the ball did not move, and finally got the solder to flow in the join.The stone fits perfectly inside the ... » Read More
