I have been making malas for years now and something that I get asked A LOT is how do you make a mala. To be honest, it is really simple. You need a bit of time and patience and of course the right supplies. For me when I was starting out buying the supplies was the easiest part. I was living in Guangzhou, Guangdong or sometimes called Canton in China. Guangzhou has some amazing markets, especially for jewelry. There are some markets that are the size a five mega sized wal-marts stacked on top of each other, just selling boxes, bags, ribbons and other packing supplies. Its overwhelming, you can loose days in there, but you always find exactly ... » Read More
A few days ago I had a customer email me with some questions about dzi beads and it really got me thinking. He was asking what Dzi beads were best for his Chinese animal sign. To explain, according to the Chinese Horoscopes, depending on the year you are born, you are a different animal. I am born Feb 1st, 1981. So, I should be a Chicken. But, we have to follow the Chinese calendar so, I am actually a Monkey. The same as my husband who is born August 6th, 1980. Monkey- 1932 1944 1956 1968 1980 1992 2004The number of Dzi eyes is - 1, 5, 6, 7, 11, or 18My Chinese friends have told me that certain years or animal are more preferred than s... » Read More

As I posted the other day, we just had a great review by www.ohayookasan.com, which you can read here http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/blog_post/shangrilacraft/10338/shangrila_craft_reviewand here http://www.ohayookasan.com/tibetanbraclet/When I was reading this I rememberd that most Tibetan people wear siver bangles and bracelets to check their health. There is old Tibetan myth about the silver bracelets and bangles. People wear them daily to keep track of their heath. If the bracelet gets dull, looses its sine, turns dark gray or black, it means your getting sick. I thought this was the strangest thing when I first heard it. But, at the time I... » Read More

This is a photo I saw on yahoo.com news yesterday. The article was about how the Yangtze River had turned red over the last few days, for an unknown reason. My husband and I lived in Chongqing for a few months last fall. I actually you can see our apartment in this photo, across the river just to the right of the talltest building. We had the most amazing view from that apartment. We were on the 30th floor and at night all you could see were the beautiful city light, lights around the river and the many, many night curise boats. We were living there during the fall, but people told us a lot of stories about this river during the spring. They tol... » Read More

I can't believe that summer is over! I just heard via facebook (where I hear most of my news) that today was the first day back to school! I can't Believe that! wow, is all I can say. And, of course -it flew by. Spending the summer in Shanghai this year was actually quite fun. It's still a new city to my husband and I, so we did our fare share of exploring and site seeing. Besides some amazing jewelry supply markets (of course I loved them!) My favorite find was a beach. Yep, thats right, smack dab in the center of the city, by the pearl tower and right on the river is a man made beach. Its crazy cheep, easy to get to and during the week amazingl... » Read More
