Liz Taylor died this month, another icon from my youth leaving.  She I had something in common.  Unfortunately, not those stunning violet eyes!  And not the string of well-to-do exes, either.  But we both love (or in her case, loved) jewelry.  She was a serious collector.  I have a coffee table book, Elizabeth Taylor: My Love Affair With Jewelry, put out by Simon and Shuster in the early 2000's, which clearly shows her love for gems, pearls and jewelry design.  It's a great book, including  200 illustrations of the jewelry and Liz herself.  It not only shows off her pieces, but reveals the stories behind them, and what they meant to her.
Three gi-normous diamond engagement rings were the stars of her collections.  The first, a 29.4 carat piece was from Mike Todd, who also gave her a ruby and diamond jewelry suite (necklace, bracelet, earrings), presented to her while she was in the pool, taking a break from swimming laps, while wearing another of his gifts - a great diamond tiara.   The second showstopper, the incomparable Krupp diamond at 33.19 carats was a gift from Richard Burton, who also gave her a 4-piece suite of jewelry (necklace, bracelet, earrings and ring) in emeralds and diamonds.  And then he topped himself by acquiring the Cartier diamond, later to be known as the Taylor-Burton diamond, an unbelivable 69.42 carats, which Liz wore for a time as a ring, and then had fashioned into a necklace.
Looking around through my own pieces, I came up with one that I thought Liz might like.....and I've added it to this blog post for you.  It is a faceted citrine round with great warmth and color..
I humbly submit it.  Here's to you, Liz !!!
