I found a gem of a place to travel to without breaking my pocketbook.

When I think of Oklahoma, I think of Oklahoma City and the plains or flatlands broken by scattered hilly areas such as the Wichita Mountains in the southwest and the Arbuckle Mountains in the south central. However, southeast Oklahoma has the Oauchita Mountains that extend from Oklahoma to western Arkansas. Within these mountains is a subrange, the Kiamichi Mountains, with peaks that rise as much as 2,000 feet above their base. They are absolutely stunning!

Broken Bow, Oklahoma is located at the foothills of the Kiamichi Mountains and is just three hours driving distance from Dallas, Texas, which is a short commute for us to have a great vacation. The area is home to Beaver Bend State Park, a most scenic spot for families or couples who want to stay in the dozens of cabins in the park or the numerous private cabin communities (upwards of 100) nearby.

The city boasts nearby Broken Bow Lake, one of the most beautiful lakes I have ever

seen. This unusually scenic lake has 180 miles of shoreline and stretches 22 miles back in the Ouachita Mountain country. The area has green forests and an abundance of clear water for fishing, swimming, canoeing, boating, hiking, bird watching, golfing, camping, and horseback riding. This is where my husband and I spent one fun-filled week this past July.

Broken Bow is also a fishing mecca. Now I don’t fish but my husband is an angler. However, I got so caught up in the moment that I bought my own fishing pole and lures. Granted my husband had to set up the rod/reel system for me, but I fished like I was a pro (in my mind only). I caught some bass, crappie, and had loads of fun just trying. My husband had fun fishing in Mountain Fork River that runs through Beaver Bend State Park. We really enjoyed eating the trout he caught.

The cabin we stayed in was within a few feet of Lower Mountain Fork River. Management provided a flat bottom boat and motor for us to use for fishing. I actually walked out my front door and fished off the bank of the river. Our rustic cabin was beautifully furnished, had washer/dryer and satellite TV. We ate inside the cabin in our kitchen but sometimes ate outside on our deck or by our campfire. We also grilled steak, corn on the cob, potatoes, and all the other fixins'. What a life!

Broken Bow is a place I will return to again and again.
