Now there’s a question. To the uninitiated, a cardigan clip, otherwise known as a sweater guard, is a decorative piece of jewellery used to secure the front opening of a cardigan. These pieces were very popular in the 1950/60’s, especially when worn with buttonless cardigans or capes.
Cardigan clips come in all shapes and sizes, but basically they comprise two decorative clips which are linked together with a chain of some kind. They often feature pearls, rhinestones or thermoset stones.
You can, of course, make your own cardigan clip by simply acquiring a nice pair of clip on earrings and linking them together with a decorative chain, or string of pearls.
Programs such as Mad Men have revived the interest in vintage jewellery and 1960’s fashion.
Above, is a particularly splendid example of a vintage rhinestone cardigan clip which is currently for sale in my Artfire store – http://www.crystalpearl.artfire.com
As Austin Powers would say “Groovy baby!” ;-)
