In the wintertime, I frequently find myself away from home more than usual. My day job takes me away to the city during the week and with the difficult weather this time of year can bring, I often spend more time on my own in the city. Being away from my home and family and the day-to-day responsibilities that entails gives me an opportunity to focus more on creating and less on what I need to do next. Although I miss them terribly, it is a welcome break from the routine of my life.
Traveling with crafts isn't difficult--or at least it doesn't have to be. I spent a little time this last weekend setting up a small tote with a few things that I want to work on over the course of this week. My tote holds a few balls of cotton yarn, a handful of crochet hooks, a small pair of scissors and a couple of patterns to work from. It takes less room than my laptop bag.
Small crochet projects like the booties and caps I like to make or the this one I found for the tawashi scrubbies are perfect to take along and work on when I have a few minutes or an evening to spare. The tawashi shown here was created in less time than it takes to watch your favorite romantic comedy.
I also like small projects such as this because it quickly gives me a sense of accomplishment. I can create a couple of these in the course of an evening that I would have otherwise spent flipping channels and snacking on chips. It keeps my hands busy and my mind occupied. This is a good thing. I belive if I did not have this outlet for creativity and self-expression, I would surely be less content with my life.
The pattern on which this tawashi was based came from Melbangel here on Artfire. You can find this pattern and many more fun and interesting patterns by visiting her studio www.melbangel.artfire.com
