Light orange picot crochet booties for infant baby layette 0-3 months
When I was young and starting my own family, I enthusiastically spent most of my pregnancy crocheting things for my newborn.  Back in that particular day, the colors were limited to a pale palette of pastels in 'baby colors' in one weight of 'baby yarn.'  It was the traditional thing to do so of course I did it in blue, green, yellow and white for my little boy.  Had I been expecting a girl, I would have used pink, lavender, yellow and white.  It was, and is, tradition.

Things are much different today.  The young, expectant mother of this century has other ideas on what she wants for her newborn.  Sure, there are lots of women who like to stick with traditional pastel colors.  But more and more we're seeing baby layette items in bold colors and bright prints intended for use beyond the age of infancy and into toddlerhood.

As someone who enjoys crochet for babies, I find that I like this trend quite a lot.  The color choices in the 'official' baby yarn haven't varied much, but I'm finding a lot of other lighter weight fibers in vibrant colors tht are very well-suited for layette use.  A widely available choice in acrylic yarn is Caron's Simply Soft.  Most of the baby items in my studio are made from this ultra soft yarn.  It is easy to work with and easy to clean without special requirements.  It stays soft through multiple washes.

Look for more, brighter colors in my 2012 line of baby items.
