Grandma was extremely good to my older daughter and purchased an American Girl doll for her as soon as she was capable of reading the books that go along with them. Once the doll entered the house I started thinking about making things for the doll to wear. I did find a couple patterns on the internet, but did not have much luck at first finding too many patterns.
Now I have decided to work on making some patterns and clothing for 18 inch dolls myself. Knowing that I am gauge challenged, I have been thinking carefully about how I will design patterns that need to be a specific size in order to fit the dolls. I am hoping that the patterns I write will be easy enough for someone who does not have the same gauge as me to utilize my patterns to create items that will fit their dolls.
My first pattern for American Girl dolls is a ballet shrug. I have written it with suggested number of rows for each section of crocheting, but also with measurements of how long each section is and where to add or subtract rows if your stitches are taller or shorter than mine. I hope to create other patterns for dolls soon that will utilize this same idea. I know I have tried a few patterns in my time that I had to give up on because I just could not get anywhere near the gauge suggested, so I hope my patterns will be written in such a way as to avoid that issue.
If you crochet and would like to try out my ballet shrug, you can find it on Ravelry (you may have to copy and paste the link):

If you are not on Ravelry, just contact me and I would be happy to send you the pattern.
For those who do not crochet, I do have a few ballet shrugs in my studio and would be happy to make one in a favorite color and even a matching tutu.
I hope to try creating a cardigan for my next American Girl doll pattern. I have been perusing some stitch guides to pick the perfect stitch for the body of the sweater.
