What is a tawashi?

I had never heard of tawashi myself until I discovered someone had linked to my wordpress blog with a comment that one of my patterns could make a good tawashi. That sent me to do some research. I discovered that a tawashi is a cute cleaning scrubber, usually made with acrylic yarn. They seem to have exploded in Japan, where you can even find anti-bacterial yarn for them.
Since I like to do things a little differently (and wanted to make my tawashi for both body and cleaning dishes,) I decided to try making mine with cotton on one side and nylon tulle on the other. Not sure where the nylon tulle idea came from, since nylon netting seems to be used by many people to make simple circular kitchen scrubbers.
Personally, I use my tawashi all the time. I have some that are acrylic and some that are cotton in the kitchen. The cotton ones do fade a bit over time. The acrylic do not fade, but do stain. We keep several tawashi in the bathroom as well for cleaning our bodies.
For cleaing the tawashi, I just throw them in the wash and then through the dryer since fading is not an issue for me. For sanitizing between washes, the kitchen ones get soaked in water and then thrown in the microwave for a minute. Be VERY careful about removing them from the microwave, as they will be very hot. I often just open the microwave to remind myself they are there and give them a few minutes to cool.
There are patterns and some tawashi in my Artfire shop right now. If you would like to try out a pattern before purchasing, check out this free flower tawashi pattern:
