Choosing the "Just right" piece of Wood

In creating my Rustic Lamps, I begin by searching for the "just right" piece of wood. It may be a large branch or part of the trunk. A straight up and down piece is for me, too boring. It has to have character. I love it when I find "twisted wood". Old wood also has certain character to it. I have to be sure however, that the old wood is fit and not rotted.

The cedar wood I use is plentiful in my corner of the world. I love the color variations of cedar. Knots in the wood are also an added feature and look great on a finished lamp. Cedar bark is shaggy. It has to be peeled off with a knife. Time consuming, but, it makes for great kindling to start a fire. Once that process is completed you then have your first look at the wood.

My next step is to cut the base of the wood piece in order for it to sit on the base properly. This can be tricky. I have a table saw that I use. It is a dangerous machine. A few years ago, I had an accident, loosing 3 fingers on my left hand.

There is quite a bit of hand sanding for each lamp that I make. Then my next step is to make the wooden base.
