Crystals need to be protected from physical damage as well as from energetic imbalances. Crystals will hold onto the negative vibrations and emotions of those individuals who have used them previously in meditation or healing work. Crystals should be cleansed after using them for healing. Always cleanse jewelry that has come to you from someone else. Cleansing will bring your crystal back to a neutral state so that accumulated energies are not passed on.
A number of methods may be used for clearing or cleansing crystals. Warning: The method you choose for any particular stone must consider both the composition and the fragility of the stone. Do not use any water methods on stones that are friable or water-soluble.
Running Water
As you hold your stone under running water, hold the intention that all negativity will be washed away and the crystal reenergized. Think about a beautiful waterfall or imagine the waves lapping over your crystal on a tropical beach.
Sea Salt and Crab Apple
Soak crystals in a non-metallic container filled with water infused with either purifying sea salt, crab apple Bach Flower Remedy, or clean sea water. Be aware that it can be difficult to remove all traces of salt from a stone, and also that salt will damage the surfaces of softer stones.
Dry Sea Salt
Dry sea salt (without any extra additives) piled around the stone is a good alternative, especially for friable stones and clusters. Leave the stone in the salt overnight and then gently brush away every speck of salt afterwards to ward off damage. Throw the salt away after use.
Sun and Moon Light
Place the crystal in the light of either the sun or moon for a half a day. Be careful not to use this method for stones that will fade in the sunlight, or to focus the rays where they could start a fire.
Sound
Resonant sound from a tuning fork, metal bowl, or bell will rapidly vibrate the physical structure of the crystal. Hold a struck bell or tuning fork close to your stones, or place one or two crystals in the bottom of a Tibetan singing bowl and run the handle around the rim to create sound.
Earth Burial
Remember that crystals have come from the earth. To enliven a very tired crystal, bury it in clay or the earth. Leave it in place for a day to a week, and always be sure to mark the spot well.
Smudging
Smudge your crystals by burning a smudge of dried herbs and waving the smoke over and through them. You could also pass the stones through the light from a candle.
Visualization
Visualize your stone surrounded by light. Imagine a bright star pouring pure white light through an opening in the top of our head. Guide the stone down through your body, sensing it being cleansed. Feel negative energies draining out of your feet. Now dedicate the crystal: “I dedicate this crystal to love and for the universal benefit of all”.
Other Crystals
Certain crystals have the ability to cleanse other crystals. Place carnelian in a bag of tumbled stones to keep them cleansed, or place a stone needing cleansing on a bed of a clear quartz or an amethyst cluster.
Self Cleaning
Citrine, kyanite, and azeztulite are self-cleaning and never need cleansing.
