imageThe term comes from the Spanish word for lasso, and refers to a necklace that is worn without a clasp. It is also the name for any necklace that is more than 45 inches (115 cm) long. There are a variety of lariat styles, each one with their own unique methods of closure. Some rely a little on gravity, while others can be knotted or wrapped like a scarf.

Trendy and versatile, lariats are fun and easy to wear, since there are no clasps to fumble with. If you’ve never put one on before, these necklaces might seem a little awkward at first. Once you get the hang of tying them, lariats could become your favorite accessory!

Slide Lariats

The most simple lariat style uses a loop on one side to form a closure that can be worn a few different ways. The opposite end of the necklace might be plain, or have a fob or fringe to help weigh it down and keep the necklace in place.

Fern Fringe Slide or Loop Lariat

To wear this type of necklace, grasp each end with your hands, and place the center of the necklace at the back of your neck. Bring the ends to the front, and drop the fringe side through the loop.

How to Tie a Slide Lariat

You can wear the closure out in front as a pendant, or off to the side for an asymmetrical look. With most necklace styles, you can also slide the loop up and wear it at choker length, with the plain end as a pendant.

Choker Length Lariat Style

Rope Lariats

Another common lariat style is the rope, which is simply a length of material, chain or beadwork that is long enough to be wrapped and draped.

The easiest way to wear these necklaces is to bring the center of the rope to the front of your neck, then cross the ends behind you, and bring them around to the front again. This creates a choker look, with the ends hanging free. If your necklace is long enough, you can also cross or knot the ends in front.

Wrapped Spiral Rope Lariat

With some lariats, you can wrap them on just like a scarf. Fold the necklace in half, and grasp the fold in one hand, and the ends in the other. Center the folded necklace at the back of your neck, and bring both the ends and fold forward. Then, tuck the ends into the loop created by the fold, and pull them through.

How to Wrap a Lariat Necklace

You can adjust the length of the necklace by pulling the ends up or down. You can also stagger the length by folding the necklace off-center, so one fringe drops a little lower than the other.

Lariat Length Necklaces

Most closed necklaces that are over 45 inches long can be wrapped just like an open lariat. The flexibility and drape will vary depending on the materials your necklace is made with.

Wrapping an Extra Long Necklace Lariat Style

You can also knot most lariats for a cute 1920’s look. To do this, bring both ends to the front, and fold them together to form a loop. Pass the end(s) through the loop, and adjust the knot to the position that you want before you gently pull the knot snug.

How to Knot a Lariat Necklace

Depending on the material that you necklace is made of, untying the knot may prove difficult, so this style might be best used with pieces you want to wear knotted all the time. However, the longer the knot stays in, the tighter it will become. You can use your best judgment when deciding whether or not to knot!
