Of all the types and styles of jewelry to choose from, fit matters most for bracelets and bangles. Too small, and it won’t be comfortable or wearable. Too big, and a bracelet could fly off with the day’s first enthusiastic hand gesture, or worse yet, silently slip away without notice. The only thing more frustrating than a lost piece of jewelry, is one that could have fallen off .
So, when shopping for bangles online, it’s important to know what measurements to use and look for, so you can find a bangle that’s right for you. Since you can’t try on and test each piece, accurate measurements are key.
A bangle is any bracelet that does not use a clasp or other closure. There are two basic styles to choose from. Adjustable bangles or cuffs are typically made from stiff material, and have an opening at the back of the design, so that they can cover a wider range of sizes. The opening allows for a bit more wiggle and stretch.
Solid bangles use a single ring or hoop to form a bracelet that slips over the hand. The size must be just right, so that you can put it on comfortably, but wear it without fear of it slipping back over the heel of your hand and rolling away.
The most important measurement for a bangle’s size is the inside circumference - the length of the inner side of the ring. This measurement must be compared to both your wrist size and your hand size.
The inside circumference of a bangle should be large enough to fit comfortably around your wrist - extra large if you like lots of movement, or smaller if you want a closer fit. You also need to compare the bangle size to your hand, to make sure that you will be able to put it on comfortably.
The most comfortable way to slip on a solid bangle is to tuck your thumb in to contract your hand. Simply try to touch the inside of your pinkie finger with the tip of your thumb. This should allow you to slip on closed bangles that will fit you correctly. Once on your wrist, the heel of your hand will block the bangle from falling off.
To find your bangle size, mimic this tucking motion, and measure around the widest part of your hand. This is usually the area around the heel of your hand or the base of your thumb. You can use a flexible ruler or sewing tape, or mark the measurement on a length of string, and compare it to a straight edge ruler.
Bangles that are made from stiff materials like metal, wood or plastic need a very precise measurement. Softer bangles, like those made with crochet or beadwork, will have a little bit of stretch, and can flex to meet not only the size of your hand, but the shape of it as well. These bangles will usually fit within a half inch or 1-2 cm difference.
Once you know your bangle size, you’re ready to layer up with lots of bold pieces or wear one sensational statement piece. Have fun!
