There are many methods for finding the perfect ring fit, many of which you can do right at home.  All you need is a measuring tool, and a size chart.

First you will need to find the width of your finger.  The easiest method is to measure with a flexible ruler, like a seamstress tape.  If you don’t have one, you can use a length of string, and then measure it against a standard ruler.  Taking your measurements in millimeters will give the most accurate ring size.

Measuring Your Finger

Using a piece of string that doesn’t stretch, wrap the length around the base of your finger, and use a felt marker to indicate the point where the string overlaps.  You can then measure the string from the end to your mark, or compare it to the ring size lengths on a printable sizing chart.

You can also use a ring sizing chart to measure a ring you already have.  This method works well if you are giving a ring as a gift - you can borrow and measure a ring to find out what size to buy for your friend or relative.

Hard rings made from metal, wood, or plastic, need a very precise size, and you need to make sure that your ring will fit both the base of your finger - between your hand and knuckle - and over the middle knuckle.  With beadwork rings, the flexible structure means that you can go up one size, and still have a comfortable and wearable fit.

Some beadwork rings also have very tall bands.  To make sure that these rings will fit, you also need to measure the length of your finger.  This should be done from the palm side.  Measure the length of the base of your finger, leaving a little room to either side for flexibility.  If a ring is too tall for you, you won’t be able to bend your finger while wearing it.

Measuring Your Ring Length

Because of the way beadwork rings hug your finger, it is best to wear them on one of the middle three.  Thumbs and pinkies don’t have quite the right shape to wear a beadwork ring with maximum comfort and fit.

Finding the Perfect Ring Fit

Beadwoven jewelry that is worn snugly - like rings - will relax over time, causing an increase in size.  To help make sure that my rings will fit correctly, I pre-stretch each piece before measuring.  Once a ring has been stretched to it’s limit, I measure the final size, so you can get a ring that will fit like a glove.

Even the stiffest beadwork is softer than traditional jewelry materials, and makes for wonderfully comfortable rings.  If they weren’t so eye catching, you might forget you’re wearing one!
