Introducing Seamus, the Newest Shadow Dog

The end of April and May have been very busy for me in many ways.  After loosing two Shadow Dogs in six months, our sweet Chase in November and wonderful Loki suddenly last month, we adopted a new puppy from the El Paso Humane Society on Earth Day.  We had actually picked out another dog a week earlier, but when we came back with Mesa, there was no way they would get along together.  Mesa made that very plain for the whole world to see.

Then we found Seamus (his name there was "Cowboy" - ugh!).  He was sitting in the corner of his run, looking very dejected and sad.  He almost had an Eeyore look to him.  We called to him, he got up and came over to us with a slowly wagging tail and beautiful eyes.  My husband and I were smitten at first look.  And, even better, Mesa wagged her tail and they touched noses.  We walked out of there about 30 minutes later with an 11 week old puppy.

Adopting a new puppy has seriously but a kink in my jewelry designing, blogging and networking - was just barely able to keep up with several custom orders that came in.  But I'm not complaining.  Seamus, the new puppy, is a joy.  He is extremely smart and so wants to please.  Potty training has been a breeze and he quickly learned his new name, to come when called and to walk on a leash.  Now I'll be the first to admit that the puppy devil does get into him at least once a day and he becomes an ankle shark!  When we fuss at him for having punctured ankles, he gives us that big "who me?" look and will stop, for a little while at least.  We have now developed a routine where I can get some work done when it's siesta time for him in the afternoon :)

Both my husband and I are amazed at how well Mesa has taken to Seamus.  We weren't sure how she would react once he was home because she had been badly abused the first year of her life before she came to live with us.  She is extremely protective and has real trust issues, both with humans and other dogs.  But Mesa took to him almost right away and they have long play sessions, ones that she often initiates.  Seamus loves being around her.  It's so much fun to watch them together and I find myself just sitting outside in the grass with them, enjoying their dogginess.

Below is a photo of Mesa after a long, hard romp around the yard with Seamus.

And just a side note:  Seamus (pronounced "shay mus") is a Gaelic word for James.  But if you follow the history of the name even farther, Seamus, in Old Hebrew, means "one who grabs at heels" - which is perfect since the vet thinks Seamus has a lot of blue heeler in him.  We don't know what else he has, maybe some boxer, maybe some pit bull.  Whatever . . . we love this new shadow dog like there is no tomorrow.

Thank you so much, Michele! Hahaha . . . you should see how big he has grown! Not the small cute puppy - now a 66+ lb. 7 1/2 month old cute puppy! And thank you for the kind words about Mesa. Unfortunately, we lost her in June. My whole world shifted when that happened. I'm s glad she picked out Seamus for us (:

First of all, I am so sorry for the loss of your two puppies. So much sadness but worth it for the love you shared while you had them. Second of all, bless your heart for adopting. I try to be an advocate of adoption and rescue and love to see other people that believe in it as well. Thirdly, he is adorable!!! Those eyes...they melt my heart! I would love to take photos of him and those eyes. He is a lucky boy. Michele

Love the entry! Seamus is a little prince of personality and cuteness. (Of course, Mesa, with her gorgeous ears and eyes, is the queen.) :)
