Category: Fun at the Auction

I do love a good auction! It's great to be in the middle of the action, sorting through the goods & sizing up the competition! Whether the pickins' are a slim or lush you can always be assured of having a great time. What I enjoy almost as much as the thrill of the bid is all the different types of folks who show up at these events. You have the butterflies-flitting from pile to pile--oohing & aahing at each & every thing but buying nothing. There are hoverers-- they make piles of items every couple of yards, try to stand guard over them all & fuss if you look at anything in any of them. Then you have the scoutmasters who attempt to supply expertise on all items & every aspect of buying & biding whether they are asked to or not...and mostly they are not! My favorites though, are the junk yard dogs. These folks(mostly middle aged women in my experience) will make themselves a pile of stuff and hide something good underneath. They will then attempt to intimidate anyone who wants to look through it. Now, nobody owns anything at an auction until the auctioneer says so but that doesn't stop these ladies from acting like they have rights to whatever they find. It should not surprise anyone who knows me that I delight in bursting the bubbles of these types just a bit! ;) So I watch & wait & then go right up to the piles & root around for the buried treasure. They can bark at me all they want but if I suspect they are trying to put one over on the crowd, I just can't help myself! I uncovered a beauty of a piece of milk glass hiding in a pile of old towels once using this very technique! So, even if I don't come away from the auction with a great treasure trove of goods you can be assured I will have had a good time! ;)
