Sedona, Arizona is in the heart of Red Rock country. As the name implies, the rocks are colored red. There a lots of place to lodge, we chose Sky Ranch Lodge since it is a little bit out of the way. It is located up above the city across from Sedona’s municipal airport. You would never know there was an airport, never heard any planes.

The view of the canyon from Sky Ranch Lodge is spectacular. The view is breathtaking during a sunset and sunrise. The rooms are clean and comfortable, staff is friendly. We stayed in the Garden View Room which is more economical than the canyon view. The garden is very pretty, is shaded, and had plenty of places to sit to do some reading. The airport restaurant is a good place for breakfast and dinner but there are restaurants in town, we just found it more convenient to just walk to the airport and eat.

The lodge also sells the Red Rock Canyon parking permits for five dollars which is needed to park your car at trial heads which are everywhere throughout the city. You can get these permits at any store, motel, or the Red Rock Canyon Visitors Center. There is a trial head on the side of the road on Airport Road, which can get very crowded especially during sunset, but if you can find a spot, there are trials to walk and a mesa to climb up to (mesa means table in Spanish, it is the flat part of a peak). People climb up to the mesa to sit and meditate, or read or just look around and take photos. Vortex is a term that I kept hearing people say but didn’t know what it meant, thought maybe it had something to do with the geologic formation of these rocks. I read someplace that it has something to do with the energy at these mesas; it is a metaphysical experience, which is why people meditate at these mesas.

Trials are everywhere throughout the city, Soldier Pass Trial, and Tea Cup Trial heads are right in the middle of subdivision. There are little parking lots for vehicles, and the hikes are awesome and not very difficult hiking. Great photo opportunities.

A great park to visit is Slide Rock State Park, just north of Sedona; plenty of rocks to climb but the main attraction is the natural water chute. Water was chilly but a lot of fun to play. This park closes early, at 5 PM and the cost at this time of year was ten dollars.

So, if you’re visiting Arizona, be sure to see Sedona.
