Vintage Harmony Roy Smeck Vita-Uke Ukulele

Product Description
Vintage Harmony Roy Smeck Vita-Uke Ukulele. In 1927 Harmony introduced the Roy Smeck Vita Uke signature model, a pear-shaped instrument with stylized "seal" f-holes. Made in Chicago, natural lacquer finish, curly mahogany back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard. Here's an excerpt from an article about the Vita-Uke from June 25th, 1927:

"The Roy Smeck Vita-Uke, which this well-known artist uses in playing before the public as well as recording on the Vitaphone, is made by the Harmony Co., string instrument manufacturer, at 1738 North Lawndale avenue, this city (Chicago). The introduction of this new ukulele, which he is sponsoring in his appearances throughout the country, has aroused a great deal of attention, for it combines a number of popular features of the ukulele with a new and brilliant tone. Jay Kraus, president of the Harmony Co., announces that the instrument has captivated the trade as well as the public and it is now handled by the leading jobbers. "With its unusual tone and exceptionally pleasing design, the instrument has enjoyed an immediate demand since its recent introduction," said Mr. Kraus. "There are two sound holes cut in the shape of seals," he explained, "which we have found to aid materially in producing the unusual volume and quality of tone."

The length is 21 1/2 in. (54.6 cm.), 8 in. (20.3 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 1/2 in. (6.4 cm.) in depth at side.

There is a long crack on the back (see picture 4) but other than that, it is in great condition for it's age.
