Details

This copper leaf pendant with caged aquamarine beads necklace was made using a technique known as form folding. The leaf shape was cut out of 26 gauge copper sheet, heated with a torch and formed into a leaf. I then filed, buffed and polished it to expose shiny copper in certain areas, while leaving areas darkened by heating untouched.

A caged aquamarine bead dangles from the leaf as a design accent. The pendant is suspended on oxidized copper chain and interspersed with additional caged aquamarine beads and copper bead components.

The warm tones of the copper combined with the cool blue of the aquamarine are a beautiful pairing of colors, while the curved shape of the leaf and the caged beads are the perfect union of shape and texture.

Fold forming was invented by Charles Lewton-Brain in 1980 and is a before unknown method of working with metal. The British Museum Research Lab and the Rolex Awards for Enterprise have certified that Fold-forming is new and has not been done before in the history of metal working.

Metal is heated, hammered, folded and unfolded in a way that lets the natural properties of the metal help determine the final shape of the item, rather than forcing the metal into a predetermined form.

This necklace measures 18.5 inches / 47 cm in length and the leaf is 1.5 inches / 3.8 cm long. An oxidized lobster clasp completes this lovely necklace.
