Black Cairn Terrier Dog 'Toto' 1937 Lucy Dawson Canine Portrait

Dog fanciers will recognize Lucy Dawson's name - and rightfully so! No one saw the beloved dog with a more loving, affectionate eye than Lucy Dawson.

Here, from a discarded 1st edition of Dawson's 1937 classic, 'Dogs As I See Them'", is a wonderful two sided paper featuring 2 engraved studies of the wonderful dark coat Cairn Terrier, 'Toto'.

The heavy, two sided paper measures 9" x 11.25" (23x29 cm) and has no tears, creases, marks, or folds. The paper is smooth and clean and Toto is simply too adorable for words!

Two studies are here - one on each side - and either side will be absolutely perfect for framing. Or perhaps you'll copy these and keep the original safe, using the images in your art.

You are purchasing an original 1937 two sided paper and it does not have watermarks. I'll send this to you flat, protected, and by USPS 1st Class mail.

Inspiration/Story Behind This Product

Lucy Dawson (British, ca 1875-1954) was noted for her paintings and etchings of dogs of all breeds. Dawson worked in pencil, pen, ink and oil and was best known for her work in pastels. An absence of background clutter ensures the animal becomes the focal point of her work.

Under the pseudonym 'Mac', Lucy Dawson is best known for her dog postcards published by Valentines and Sons as the 'Tailwagger' series.

She enjoyed regular commissions and one of her most famous requests was that by the Royal family who took her to the Royal Lodge at Windsor to paint their favorite corgi, Dookie.
