When I began to sew I made many, many errors and as a result many, many garments went to the Salvation Army because they simply didn't fit. I am sure most of you know all this already but if you don't here are some guidelines I would like to pass on to you.

Always check the fit around the neck. Be sure to pin it on at the shoulders and make adjustments at the neckline so that it lays smooth front and back. You will need a bit of help with the back of the neck so find someone to help; you won't be sorry. Leaving it on with the shoulders pinned, bring the side seams together to check to made sure the armholes do not gape too much.

If the neck front, back or both need to be made smaller make even tucks on each pattern piece and tape. If it needs to be larger, you can cut evenly place slits in the neck, pull each slit apart an equal amount and tape paper in the slit you have created. You may have to redraw the neckline but that will make sense when you make the corrections. Also don't forget the resize the facings. If you buy a pattern to fit the bust line, most often you are reducing the size around the neck.

Then I would fit the pattern pieces around the arms and chest to make sure there will be no gapping of fabric or perhaps you are broad across the back and need to slit the neckline to create more ease.

Do the same with the armhole. Tape down your corrections and now you have the perfect pattern.
If you are making this pattern out of expensive fabric I would suggest making a muslin first or at least making it out of an inexpensive fabric. If you have any questions about this, please get in touch with me.
