This piece is made with chunky red sponge coral 20mm flat rounds and 8mm round beads, the focal pendant bead is a white turquoise slab. It is approximately 65mm long and 32mm at the widest point with small white magnesite nuggets in between the coral beads. This beautiful necklace is finished with a German silver clasp. The pierced earrings dangle on silver plated ear wires and are 2 1/2" long which includes the paddle. They are red sponge coral dangling from silver plated ear wires.

Sponge coral is known scientifically as melithaea ochracea, and despite its name, it is not a sponge at all. Instead, it is a type of coral that has a spongelike appearance. Sponge coral is imported to the United States from Asia, and it is popularly used in jewelry. Sponge coral may be rough or it may be polished smooth into beads or pendents. Sponge coral is primarily found in the South China Sea, in waters close to Taiwan and stretching south to Indonesia.
