Vintage Chinese brass coin with dragons on one side and Chinese characters on the other side.
I believe this coin is representational of coins of the Qing Dynasty (Yongzheng AD 1723 - 1735)
In the late 1970's my husband was in Taiwan on one of our very first buying trips and was lucky enough to find a number of these brass coins which are reproductions of antique coins. The stamping is ornate and in high relief.

Chinese coins have always been associated with wealth and prosperity for hundreds of years and are often carried as 'lucky' pieces. Although such coins have not actually been made as money by a Chinese government for almost 100 years, they have been duplicated because of their significance as an important role in the practice of any Fen Shui cures involving increasing wealth or money energy!

Many of the ancient coins had square holes like this reproduction and were associated with special charm qualities. Often, these coins were given to children in olden times as lunar New Year money .
These coins were also considered to represent good luck because they commemorated a reign lasting for sixty years which is a complete cycle of the traditional Chinese calendar and thus symbolic of a long life.

Traditionally, these coins also acted as a keepsake or pledge of love between a man and a woman. Some women would even wear one of these coins tied to their hand in lieu of a "gold" engagement ring.
