One of my favorite places for taking photographs of birds is at Lake Merritt in Oakland California. At certain times of the year the trees are full of egrets and other birds. I took this photograph of an egret taking off in flight over the Lake. For the collage, I copied the picture of the egret, offset the two images, and blended them to achieve an abstract design. Using pigment inks, which are waterfast and lightfast, I printed the collage on fine cotton fabric. Reinforcing the fabric with thick interfacing, I stitched along some of the lines of the image. On the reverse I sewed a vintage postcard back printed on cotton, and I finished by satin stitching around the edges with golden thread.

This mini-quilt postcard is 4 inches high by 6 inches wide (10.2 by 15.2 cm). If you want to use it as a postcard, you can write on the back with a pen. It can be mailed without an envelope. If mailed inside the United States, the post office requires a letter stamp (not a postcard stamp).

Many people love to hang my fabric postcards in front of a window, so a bit of light shines through the fabric.
