Wonderful scenic cameo, a nice change from the typical portrait cameo. Ca. 1940s (possibly earlier), hand carved on a thin, fine shell with beautiful translucency. This is a soft, shallow carving, with dimension given it by the fine cross-hatching in the carving and the artisan's use of the shell's natural curvature. The twisted-rope frame is gold fill over sterling. Marked "S.P. CO. 1/20-12KT." We're unsure of the maker's mark here (could it be the Forbes Silver Plate Company?), but gold-fill designation is clear.

This is a perfect gift for someone special; comes in a gift box or case.

Measures approx. 1 9/16" in length x 1 3/16" top to bottom; small but not tiny. Excellent condition. Cameo itself appears mint, with the only "flaws" being those inherent in the shell. (There was some loose debris in one spot, which I didn't see until viewing the photos. I've gently cleaned it, so if you do see it in the picture, it's no longer there!) Minimal wear to the surface of the metal, less than expected in a piece this age, and some light tarnish.
