I live in Florida and if its one thing I know, it is oranges. This steampunk sculpture however, is unlike any orange we have ever grown on our property!



The sculpture is made entirely of hand blended polymer clays on a round glass vase base. The interior of the vase has been covered in a butter cream with just the tiniest bit of gold to give it a slight shine. It really looks like orange pith. The "skin" of the orange is a combination of clays blended to look like old gold, bronze, and new gold metallic plates spot welded or screwed with silver screws onto the actual oranges skin. The clock face inside the orange is a slice of "orange", made from a cane of orange and translucent clays to represent the actual individual cells of juice within the 6 segments of the orange slide, edged and wrapped with the butter cream clay to look like the pith that separates the segments and the orange from its skin, and the orange skin. The numbers on the clock face are a deep, rich copper. There are gears inside the orange and a brad studded bug on the outside. The back of the piece is covered with green-gold orange leaves.



There is 19-ounces of clay in this sculpture. The entire piece is approximately 7- by 7- by 7-inches.



I have not glazed this piece because I felt that the shine would be distracting. However, if you want me to glaze it before I send it to you, just let me know.

This sculpture is, obviously, a play on words. I was trying to think of an entry for the Art Fire Polymer Clay Smooshers monthly challenge (this month is Steampunk) and for some unknown reason, the movie A Clockwork Orange popped into my head (I've never even seen the movie, so I don't know why it popped into my head, but there have been a lot of random things weaving their way in and out of there lately). The longer I worked on it, the more fun I had with it. This is definitely one of my favorite pieces!!
