Product Description
Crackle glass vase, orange, huge crackles - 7 inch vintage.

At one time, I had over 1500 crackle glass pieces in my shop and thought I was pretty knowledgeable on crackle, too. My husband comes from WV, so we had done a lot of research--long story short, this is from the shop and I have it tagged Blenko, but I sold my books when I retired, so can't give a reference.

This large crackled (the crackles are large) vase is sort of a burnt orange, 7 inches high and 5" in diameter at the lip, 3 1/2" at the base. No flaws, no chips, no cracks that shouldn't be there (picture number 4 picked up the edge of a deep crackle, it is not a crack). I'm discounting it quite a bit as I really can't keep all the wonderful pieces that I admire, time to make some space!

Inspiration/Story Behind This Product
This piece has a pontil mark in the base, shown in picture number 4. The West Virginia glass blowers, starting in the '40s, blew glass pitchers and vases and glassware, then plunged them into cold water while still hot, causing the cracks.

They were then put back in the Glory Hole (furnace) with a punty rod on the base to hold them, when that was popped off it formed the pontil mark.

Then were then annealed slowly to cool them safely.

Some of the early ones were blown into molds packed with wet sand and those will have an 'alligator' finish, rather than the sharp cracks seen in this piece.

Since I no longer have my reference books, assuming because of the color that this was a later piece. (avocado green and orange - think about the kitchen colors back then)
