This pretty container was created by covering a 2.5 ounce glass baby food jar with polymer clay. I stamped the clay with dragonflies and a fanciful swirl design and dusted the surface of the clay with blue Pearl Ex powder to add an iridescent shimmer. I strung tiny multicolored glass seed beads on heavy thread and secured them to the bottom of the jar and the lid using liquid polymer clay. On the top of the lid is a blue and purple dragonfly made from a blue glass tubular bead and two red beads for eyes. The wings were sculpted from clay and dusted with purple Pearl Ex powder after being stamped with the swirl design. The dragonfly has been wired into the clay of the lid and also secured with liquid polymer clay. I protected the clay with two layers of high gloss glaze. I covered the bottom of the jar with blue felt. The jar measures about 2 1/2 inches tall and dragonfly on the lid is 1 1/2 inches long. The lid screws on and this pretty little jar would be wonderful for storing small items you want to keep handy. Even if you never put anything in the jar, it makes a beautiful decoration. This would make a great gift for anyone who likes dragonflies.

This clay covered jar was inspired by the dragonflies who hunt in my garden. If it's possible for insects to have personality, these dragonflies have got plenty! I love seeing them cruising around the garden as they hunt, and they often sit still long enough for me to get their picture. I also thought this would be a great way to recycle the glass baby food jars I've been collecting. Of course they're thoroughly washed and sanitized before I ever add any clay. I find small jars like this very handy for storing beads and jewelry findings.
