This handmade Great Horned Owl leather mask is a unique and stunning costume piece, sure to turn heads at the masquerade. The beak and feather-tuft "horns" give this mask a dramatic profile that will not escape notice. It was meticulously hand-carved, sculpted and painted in several layers by the artist. It makes a wonderful costume mask for a man or a woman, for Halloween, Mardi Gras, larp (live action role play), theater, or masquerade parties all year round. It is a beautiful and bold art piece to display when it isn't being worn.

This mask was formed from a single piece of leather using a technique similar to cuir bouilli ("boiled leather", as in historical armor), but resulting in leather that is more flexible and lightweight. The "feathers" are all hand-painted on the leather. The mask is designed to fit the average face, and ties with black organza ribbons.

For role players, the Great Horned Owl mask grants the wearer a +2 Wisdom bonus. (Disclaimer: Your DM may or may not recognize this fact.) ;-)

The Great Horned Owl is a majestic and fearsome raptor that rules the night on silent wings. Its hapless prey doesn't stand a chance against this magnificent bird's mighty talons, which have crushing power up to five times that of a human male's hands. This beautiful and adaptable owl is to be admired -- and feared, if you happen to look tasty.

Great Horned Owls are sometimes known as Hoot Owls, Cat Owls, or Winged Tigers (or, if you're a mouse, "Death From Above"). They are found across North and Central America down into parts of South America, and have a wide-ranging habitat. Their "horns" or "ear tufts" are really neither, and have nothing to do with hearing. Their ears are actually on the sides of their faces, one higher than the other, to aid in the locating of prey. They prefer rabbits, but will take a wide variety of prey ranging from mice to raccoons, other owls, fish, bats, skunks, even domestic pets (so keep Fluffy indoors if a Great Horned Owl is lurking about).

I will refund the difference if the shipping cost is more than US $2.00 less than the estimate. (This shipping difference refund can only be issued if you have a verified account with Paypal.
