Product Description
Vintage Chinese mauve jadeite carved pendant, Vintage violet purple cape amethyst,Vintage carved frosted snow quartz, Vintage German glass, gold filled beads
In ancient Chinese mythology and based on Chinese cultural beliefs , Pixiu is one of the five lucky animals ( the other four being the dragon, phoenix, tortoise, and unicorn.) Pixiu is considered a divine animal with a dragon's head, a horse's body and a unicorn's feet. It is capable of flying - patrolling the sky to keep demons, ghosts, evil spirits, plagues and diseases at bay. It is a loyal guardian - fierce and powerful by nature - protecting its master, absorbing evil and bringing happiness, wealth and good luck. Oddly, it has a mouth but no anus, so it just swallows things inside without passing anything out. That's why it is regarded as a divine accumulator of wealth without letting any escape !
Many Chinese people wear jade ornaments shaped like a Pixiu for good luck - this exquisite vintage Chinese carved mauve jadeite pendant features two Pixius towards the bottom of the carving which are facing each other. This jadeite pendant is quite substantial, measuring 2 1/8" by 1 3/4" and has been incorporated into this long hand knotted beaded necklace .
◉ As a point of interest : Jadeite and Nephrite are completely different minerals and together they make up the" jade family". Jadeite and Jade are used interchangeably by many people who are not aware that there are actually two different kinds of Jade. Jadeite is MUCH rarer and more valuable than nephrite and mauve jadeite is the most prized and sought after.
◉ PLEASE NOTE: Burma ( Myanmar ) has perhaps the worst human rights record of any country. Consequently, the US government has recently enacted a ban on imports of rubies and jade from this country as of the fall of 2008 making such material even more scarce and desirable!
Material already inside the US can be freely sold but new imports are banned.
We 100% guarantee this carved pendant to be natural untreated Burmese jadeite from the late 1970's if not earlier that we imported into the US in the very late 1970's
Vintage cape amethyst in both a 8mm size and in hand carved leaves ( 3/4" x 1/2") have been combined with 3/4" long frosted snow quartz beads in an oval twist. There are also frosted snow quartz spacers which have been combined with vintage German glass in both a gold spotted clear bead and a mauve purple flower. Both of these beads are from the 1950's.
Gold filled beads in a 4mm and 2mm size add a bit more elegance to this one of a kind museum quality hand knotted necklace.
The silk cord has been dyed a lovely violet to blend with the cape amethyst beads.
This necklace measure 28" long - approximately 30" with the pendant.
This necklace will arrive in a vintage Chinese embroidered silk purse all ready for gift giving.
