Extraordinary hand carved dress clip. Royal blue resin *Cinnabar. The design depicts pomogranets, a blossom and 3 leaves. The detailed bezel and openwork backing are silver but I don't think they are sterling.The piece is in fine vintage condition and I believe from the early '30s.

Size: Approximately 30mm on a side.

Note: The color in the photo is lighter than the actual clip. I lightened it so that the detail of the carving could be seen.

*True Cinabar contains mecuric acid and was red or red/brown and is no longer used because of the mercury content. The Chinese also used the sap from certain trees that was also red. Many coats were painted on a wood base and then carved. Contempory "Cinabar" is either a hand carved resin or a molded resin. The later two can be colors other than red.
