Here is a very quick and easy lesson on how to use GIMP to edit your photographs. You can click on the ruler that is at the top of the canvas area or on the ruler on the left hand side of the canvas and drag it into the canvas area to check if the object in the image is straight. Once you are finished with the ruler drag it back where it belongs.

This tip will make it easier to level your image as it is being rotated manually. You can also use this tip if for some reason your camera was not level when you took the picture and you need to rotate the image a small amount in order to make the subject in your photograph level. The ocean does not look good when it is flowing downhill. I have actually seen an image of a large body of water that was not level.
