BLACK COPPER MARAN ROOSTER
12x15 PRINT OF ORIGINAL PAINTING BY DOTTIE DRACOS

I enjoyed doing this chicken art painting of a black copper Maran rooster so much. This 12x15" (on 13x16" glossy photo paper) print is from an acrylic chicken art painting I just finished. For the background, I used a subdued yellow over a darker underpainting, which I felt would best highlight the bright, brilliant feather colors on the rooster's body. At the bottom of the painting, I brought in some bold strokes of strong colors to emphasize the foreground and shadow areas beneath the rooster. In addition to my signature within the painting, I sign and date the print in the lower front border.

Chicken art paintings evoke earlier happy times for me, such as when I visited my grandparents' farm and got to enjoy their chickens up close and personal -- they bite!! I've had chickens and a rare rooster many times since then in my own small farm or backyard settings; and today I have some of my own farmyard prints in my kitchen to greet me when I go in for my morning cup of coffee. They're a cheerful addition to my kitchen.

Black copper maran chickens are quite rare in the United States due to the ban on importing certain birds into the USA. However, they are very well known in France. Their eggs are a beautiful dark, almost burgundy, brown, and are highly prized for creating wonderfully-tasting egg dishes both in France as well as in the USA. Knowing how rare they are in this country, I enjoyed even more doing this chicken art painting of a black copper Maran rooster. It was also much different in many ways from what I ordinarily do, which I felt gave me an unusual freedom with this painting to be a bit more daring than I think I usually am. Hope you like it.
