The once-fabulous neon sign of the Capri Motel, seen ascending high above us in this 11x14 photograph, has disappeared, likely (and unfortunately) sent to a landfill. But the sign-once residing in Fairfield, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati-shines on in this photo, its orange, yellow, and green letter blocks of the now-lost neon sign cheerfully contrasting with the bright blue sky behind them. The sunset lends the old steel sign a tell-tale tinge of gold along its western edge-even the silver parts of the Motel Capri's neon sign are amber-hued in the evening light.

The Motel Capri was built in or around 1956, and shows up in a local directory as the Motel Capri and Coffee Shop in 1958. The vintage motel changed hands several times afterwards, and as of 2010 was, unfortunately, vacant-despite being listed in an inventory done by the Ohio Historic Preservation Office. (The hotel's "Style Class And Design" is, amusingly, listed as "Modern Movements"-does "Googie" not fly with the OHPO?) The listing does not mention the towering sign in this photo, the neon having already been lost.

Though the Capri Motel is not in any danger of being lost just yet, I can't help but think that had this neon sign with its tower of squares, big block letters, and steel remained, it would bring the motel more attention and possibly even help its case should it become endangered. Where the sign ended up, I don't know despite my suspicions-but I'm very glad I was able to take, and share, this photograph of another likely-lost piece of retro Americana for posterity.
