Their leaves flame-orange and glorious, the two trees in this 5x7 nature art photo head into another West Virginia autumn in a blaze of fiery glory. The coral-red and vermillion leaves of the trees contrast beautifully with the green-gold grass at their roots, fallen yellow and toffee-coloured leaves from other trees strewn about them like so many wishes. The rich colours, those strong, wonderfully-textured tree trunks, the varied tones of the grass...It's a portrait of nature's beauty at full fury just before much of creation goes to sleep for winter. Sometimes I wonder if all of the brilliant jewel tones of fall are meant to help tide us over 'til spring!

Not far beyond the trees starring in the photograph, a thick forest of trees stretches out and over the rolling hills of West Virginia, the curving line of the now mostly-bare treetops mimicking those famous mountains. A few of the trees retain their leaves, these in various shades of gold and orange, but for the most part, they've surrendered their leaves to the increasingly cold breezes of autumn. Their tan and pale brown branches and trunks are yet another contrast to the grass, still mostly green, and the fiery leaves in the photograph's foreground.

On a beautiful autumn day, I like nothing more than taking my collie, Ben, to a park to wander through the forest so we can enjoy the rich, earthy fragrance and colours of fall. This day was no exception; we hopped into the car and drove up to Chester, West Virginia's Tomlinson Run State Park. Autumn always seems to end far too quickly--it creeps up on us, sneaking in on summer's coattails, provides a few glorious weeks of richly fragranced air and almost too brilliant to believe colour--and then it is gone, the trees bare and the grass dulled until spring. Photographs like this help us capture those vibrant, fleeting days.
