Though weathered and worn after years of service, the golden badge focused on in this 5x7 art photo of a vintage red fire truck is still clear enough that we can appreciate the old rusty truck's past. Each yellow-gold painted petal of the badge bears a nod to its fire-fighting history: the district, the name of its home city, a fire ladder, a fire hydrant.

Looking at the enormous fire truck, for some reason, the weathered, flaking painted badge on its reddish side is what caught my attention the most, hence it being the focus of this photograph. The gold paint is wearing off as if being rubbed over and over again-yet the outline and fire hydrant seem as if they intend to stay for quite some time, though the words and numbers probably will not last as long.

Fire truck No. 1 clearly had its start Neptune, New Jersey, but now rests in Galena, Kansas, right alongside Route 66. What was almost surely bright red paint on the vehicle is now a rusty maroon red. Somehow, the truck's chrome door handle, seen just off to the right of the hand-painted badge in this 5x7 photo, have remained in almost perfect, rust-free condition-quite a feat, as any classic car buff will be happy to reassure you!

The contrast between the handle and the truck's door itself is all the more unusual as we look more closely to see that the rust-red paint on the fire truck almost looks like it was hand-painted or buffed on in some places. The odd splotches on the crusty old truck's paint job can only be explained by years of sun, wind, rain, and dust blowing against it.

A photograph of just a tiny piece of our past, "Guardian" would be a fine addition to any home or office.
